Staying Organized

I have a passion for staying organized and keeping things in order.

This is kind of a far fetch dream with kids. It is so difficult to just keep the sink empty during the night while the people are sleeping…. or the laundry- that is a totally different story.

I have found several systems that help me stay organized and keep our home running strong.

First I like to shorten the steps in my day by keeping things just where I need them.

Example, we keep all the socks at the back door by the shoes. I fold them and toss them in the drawer. Taking it one step deeper, we all wear the same kind of socks so there is little effort in matching and sorting.

Second I like to find systems that shorten the time involved in clean up or just daily duty in general.

Example, I try to do dishes only one time each day. I have found that if I stand at the sink after each meal, I spend all day at the sink. If I just leave breakfast and lunch in the sink until I prep for and make dinner, I spend half the time knocking it all out at once. This is only difficult because the sink is a trap for water lovers like myself. So I keep the counter clean and load the dishwasher after each meal, but the things that need to be washed wait.

Third I have to remember the schedule of my cycle. There are some days that I am much more productive than others. We all cycle through highs and lows in our hormones and those hormones propel our success and also encourage our rest. Once you learn when your “ON” week is and your “OFF” week comes, you can schedule and plan your life so much more effectively.

Example, I schedule my business trainings and meetings on the week of the month that I have full energy and awareness. This keeps me true to my word and it shortens the “say do” gap. You know, the space between the things you say you will do and the things that you actually do. I am guilty of agreeing to so much, only to find myself drained and empty with a list of jobs left.

Keeping your life in order isn’t always possible and the more you add to your family, the more you add friend. I do know that seasons come and they pass. Have grace and share love, possibly the most important ingredients to staying organized.
